00:20:50 Tristan Miller: Hi Everyone! I am Tristan Miller with Climate Reality in California! Feel free to put your questions in the chat about how to make the switch and electrify! 00:21:30 Tristan Miller: Switch your gas stove, gas water heater, solar, and more! We are here to take your questions. Plus check out Seans Guide to Electrify! 00:21:49 Tristan Miller: https://www.redwoodenergy.net/research 00:22:01 Tristan Miller: Home guide: https://www.redwoodenergy.net/research/a-pocket-guide-to-all-electric-retrofits-of-single-family-homes 00:23:21 Tom Kabat (Energy Engineer): Hi, I'm Tom Kabat, an energy engineer in the other Menlo Park (CA) assisting with electrification designs and policy. I help Sean with the guides and the show. 00:23:56 Tristan Miller: If you want us to look at your case study and your New Jersey home electrification project just email Steve! Stevemiller@comcast.net 00:25:28 Tom Kabat (Energy Engineer): I have the same big LG 4.3 cubic foot washer dryer single machine that Sean has. Now GE has come out with a new (even bigger) 4.8 cubic foot heat pump version that washes and dries clothes. 00:26:46 Tracy: Are your appliances accessible to someone who is blind? In my experience, high-end appliances are not. They use tons of menus with no way for a blind person to access them. 00:28:28 Tracy: How noisy are the heat pumps? Like a gas generator? or an air conditioner? Or my very quiet solar inverter? Which? 00:30:18 Tom Kabat (Energy Engineer): Inverter driven heat pumps are quieter than the classic single-speed or two-speed air conditioners. So louder than a solar inverter and quieter than an old air conditioner. 00:33:21 Tristan Miller: 13 percent of the nation's pollution comes directly from these gas-stoves 00:33:36 Tristan Miller: "Gas cooking can raise the risk of childhood asthma by 42 percent" 00:33:37 Tim: we bought an induction hot plate. the sound bothers my dog. have you heard of this? 00:33:59 Tristan Miller: Gas Stoves Research from: Source: 2013 meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Epidemiology 00:35:38 Tristan Miller: 42% of energy-related emissions comes from homes and with the rebates/incentrives it's a great time to electrify! We are here to answer your questions 00:36:43 Winston: What kind of financial incentives can states offer to get these installed? I know that Vermont has done a great job with financial incentives for electrification. 00:37:20 Gabriel: What about NEW kitchen appliances REQUIRED for the induction oven. They can be a significant additional cost? 00:37:55 Tom Kabat (Energy Engineer): @Kim, Most states are right now working out how to offer the federal IRA upfront incentives and many will roll these out at the end of the year. 00:38:16 Winston : Thanks! 00:39:09 Tracy: I was asking about space heating, to replace our gas furnace. 00:39:42 Darshana: @ Sean-I have a new house in Texas. If I have to install Solar panels on my roof, should I electrify entire house first? Currently my electric bill is very low. Is it worth installing Solar panel in that case? 00:40:02 Tom Kabat (Energy Engineer): The federal 30% tax credits for heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, solar, and insulation and circuiting are available now and through 2032. 00:40:21 D Valentine: Reacted to "The federal 30% tax ..." with 👍 00:40:35 Francesca: My heat pump condenser is outside and is not noisy enough to bother me at all 00:41:44 Rick: what is your take on dual-fuel solutions for HVAC in central New Jersey, with gas as backup for the coldest days or power outages 00:41:56 Steve Miller: The latest AO Smith heat pump water heater has 45dBA noise spec (this is VERY quiet- l!) 00:42:21 Ranjani: In Central NJ is heat pump based system efficient enough compared to Geothermal? 00:42:26 Francesca: I find that my heat pump on the dehumidifying setting makes it colder than putting it on AC. Is it using more electricity on dehumidifying setting? 00:43:16 Tom Kabat (Energy Engineer): @Darshana, you might want to make an electrification plan to pick appliances that all fit on your existing electric panel. The guide shows some examples. Then you can estimate how much electricity your home can absorb from added solar panels if you install them. 00:43:21 Tristan Climate Reality OC: Here is the link to the IRA calculator to figure out the incentives for you! 00:43:22 Tristan Climate Reality OC: https://www.rewiringamerica.org/app/ira-calculator 00:43:38 Michael: To answer Kim question just Google you local electric utility for their EE program incentives - the incentives for HP are relatively small currently in NJ but NJBPU is just kicking off its building electrification program which will be up and running next July 2025. Plus check out the federal incentives herehttps://www.energy.gov/save/homeowners 00:43:39 Maggie Ortiz (GNJG CRP Co-Chair): For the Heat Pump water heater, if its going into an unfinished basement are there any special considerations? and how to pick between 230V or 120V versions? 00:43:51 Brenda, Charlotte Metro Chapter: Reacted to "https://www.rewiring..." with 👍 00:43:59 Michael: Was a little late to join but can you talk about building envelope and particularly rim joist sealing in uninsulated/unfinished basement 00:44:55 Robert: Any experience with running a heat pump from a Powerwall (if the grid power is completely out)? 00:46:29 Tim: we have multiple day, some times multi week power outages. I currently use a gas generator to power my oil boiler. What can I use instead of the gas generator? I was also thinking of leaving the oil heat in place to deal with those multi day outages. 00:46:43 Tom Kabat (Energy Engineer): @ Maggie, if the basement is normally above 40F you can use a 120V plug in HPWH. If it is colder than that you might want a 240Volt 15 Amp version. (It has backup resistance heating). And the new AO Smith 120V models will also have a low power backup resistance heater too. 00:47:13 Dana: Hi. I work in Campeche, Mexico in indigenous empowerment. Please let me know when is a good time to explain and ask a question regarding the work we are doing there in the area of going solar. 00:47:34 Tristan Climate Reality OC: https://www.redwoodenergy.net/research/a-pocket-guide-to-all-electric-retrofits-of-single-family-homes 00:47:49 Y : What is the difference between on demand electric water heater vs electric heat pump water heater when it comes to electricity and efficiency 00:47:52 Rick: I have a similar concern about power outages. I have a Powerwall for backup electricity and I worry the heat pump in winter will drain it in less than a day. 00:47:55 Tom Kabat (Energy Engineer): My bias is toward large tank sizes to supply lots of hot water at rush hour, and small power levels to leave more room on the panel for other electrification projects. 00:48:21 Michael: Capacity on the grid is not an issue - by state and federal law the grid operator in our case PJM and the local electric distribution utility are required to appropriate plan for future load on an annual basis - As we electrify buildings and transportation the grid planning will match load increases over time 00:48:27 Maggie Ortiz (GNJG CRP Co-Chair): Reacted to "@ Maggie, if the bas..." with ❤️ 00:51:23 Tom Kabat (Energy Engineer): @ Y The HPWHs are 3-4 tames as efficient as resistance WHs like the on demand electric WHs. Also the HPWHs, draw only 5% to 10% as much power (speed of energy delivery) as the on demand type that have to heat the water that second 00:51:54 Steve Miller: QUESTIONS, or want to have a case study of your New Jersey house? stevemiller@comcast.net 00:52:10 Gabriel: In New Jersey, if you have installed a 16 Watt Solar System when do you need a Battery? Should one wait for Time-of-Day Pricing of Electricity from Utilities, like in Californai? 00:53:07 Marty: Can you speak about the Federal tax credits and product rebates available in New Jersey now and later this year for these options? 00:53:45 Darshana: @Steve-I would like to have a case study of my house in Texas. Darshana Gupte d.gupte81@gmail.com 00:53:56 Tristan Climate Reality OC: Helpful guide to incentives and electrification too from Rewiring America: https://www.rewiringamerica.org/IRAguide 00:54:53 Tracy: Our basement is warmed by the gas furnace and ducts down there, which lead to our radiators. How would it be without the furnace? Steve Miller @Tracy: 1.5 years ago, I changed my AC to a heat pump and reused my centrally ducted gas furnace in my unheated below grade basement (the gas furnace turns "on" at outside temps less than 20 degrees F). I have not noticed a change in my basement temperature. 00:54:56 Tristan Climate Reality OC: @Darshana - Just send us photos of the appliances you want to electrify and we can send you a plan and/or present it on the next Ask Sean Show! 00:55:30 Gabriel: Is BLOWN FOAM insulation better than calking fof insulating basement joists? 00:56:06 Darshana: Thank you Tristan. 00:58:06 Michael: Thanks for reply on insulation in basement and rim joists. We have cold weather heat pump with minisplits but first floor is still steam radiators and colder than renovated second and thirds floors And basement has HP water heater. 00:58:37 Tom Kabat (Energy Engineer): @ Tracy, the house would be comfortable and the unconditioned basement would drift toward deep ground temperature of maybe 40-50F there would be much less energy needed to heat your house without accidentally heating your basement. 01:01:20 Tristan Climate Reality OC: @Virginia Anders-Ellmore - please post some of the questions you sent in 01:01:54 Linda: Dashana, let's invite Texans from your Climate Reality Chapter! 01:03:13 Thor: I have an Ioniq 5 with 1.9kw vehicle to load capability. How do I step up the 120v Ioniq to 240v for a heat pump? 01:04:58 Darshana: @Linda-You read my mind. I was thinking same thing too. All CRP-TX chapters members would benefit with from this presentation. 01:06:21 Tom Kabat (Energy Engineer): @ Thor, there are $150 versions of portable 120V/240V step-up transformers that can step up the power’s voltage from 120 to 240V. Then it could power up to a 1.9 kW heat pump ( that can be about 1.9 tons ( about 20,000 Btus per hour) 01:06:22 Francesca: Does this mean you dont have to upgrade your panel? 01:07:21 Tom Kabat (Energy Engineer): @ Francesca, Yes, much of our efforts are in picking efficient devices and sizing them properly so they meet your needs without upsizing the electric panel. 01:08:56 Tom Kabat (Energy Engineer): Ductless heat pumps also have the advantage of avoiding the common 20% upsizing needed to cover duct heat losses and duct leakage. 01:09:12 Francesca: @Tom, do you do case studies for multifamily buildings? 01:09:19 Michael: Replying to "Can you speak about ..." Marty Go yo NJcleanenergy.com for all the state incentives the NJBPU site will direct you to your local utilities fir EE rebates - you can go to https://www.energy.gov/save/homeowners to get info on the federal tax credits a 01:13:09 Tristan Climate Reality OC: Here’s the guide Sean is talking about for the IRA incentives: https://www.rewiringamerica.org/IRAguide 01:17:21 Tristan Climate Reality OC: https://www.redwoodenergy.net/research/a-zero-emissions-all-electric-multifamily-construction-guide 01:17:59 Francesca: Does the tax credit apply to innova heat pump you mentioned? 01:18:29 June: Will any of the taxcredits be assignable, as the EV credits are now? 01:18:58 Steve Miller: Further Questions for NJ homeowners?
