To The Editor:
The nonpartisan citizen group Middletown for Clean Energy has proposed Middletown look to the future by planning for 100% clean energy by 2050. The first step would be to create a Clean Energy Stakeholder Team to develop a prototype plan.
I support the proposal for a future of 100% clean energy for Middletown. First, opportunity. The transition from fossil fuels to clean energy is a multi-trillion dollar opportunity. Those with vision will make money and provide jobs. Second, clean energy is making increasing economic sense. Clean energy prices are dropping rapidly. Clean energy is now cheaper than fossil fuels in some places and will become more so. Third, clean energy is necessary for a livable future of our children and grandchildren. The replacement of fossil fuels by clean energy is necessary to help stop the documented increasingly severe impacts of climate change.
Middletown can make the clean energy transition. Over 90 cities in the US have already signed up. We have made a start, including Bronze certification from Sustainable Jersey. We need to do much more. Let’s do it.
Call or write to the Township Committee if you think Middletown should commit to 100% clean energy.
